WE UNDERSTAND NEUROSPICY!

ADHD Care

ADHD assessments at Calen Health
We are currently pausing bookings for ADHD assessments as we have been inundated with enquiries. We aim to start booking again from November; however no date is set.
ADHD is going through a long awaited adjustment in its recognition and effective management. Because of Poisons Laws unique to each state there are different rules that apply depending on where you live. It can be very tricky to understand especially when you are relocating between states. There are significant bottle necks in the system and in these early days of GP prescribing, an appropriately strict scrutiny is taking place which we have to adhere to. Safety is our first priority and we endeavour to care for all aspects of your health.

As we ensure that your assessment meets the legal and medical criteria, there are levels of evidence that are necessary. Doctors who are authorised to prescribe in WA have undergone extensive training requirements in order to do so.
Calen Health has developed a fair and automated process to handle enquiries and bookings, which is explained on this page. Please ensure that you read carefully to the bottom to understand and take part in this, as we cannot make any exceptions.

Please understand the strain on our system from patients who do not respect the workflow that we have set up. We cannot answer queries over the phone in relation to ADHD and are unable to make any exceptions to this rule. The only way to get basic (administrative) advice is to send an email to ADHD@Calenhealth.com.au. Please be patient while we filter through the emails.
You can leave a request to join our waitlist by emailing your Name, email, phone number and preferred days and times that you are available for an appointment, with a confirmation that you have read the details of our booking process below and agree to our fees including the deposit.  We also encourage you to fill in a new patient form. This does not guarantee you an appointment and so we encourage you to also seek alternative pathways.
You can have a long (30 minute) consultation with our Doctors to discuss generic ADHD medical advice but will not be able to be officially diagnosed or prescribed stimulants. A range of alternative options may be discussed including Non-Pharmacological managements and Non-Stimulant management. Attending an appointment like this does not progress your position on the waiting list. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Doctors at Calen Health are skilled in Neurodiversity but also have a broad range of General Practice skills including Paediatrics, Women’s Health, Skin Checks and Sexual Health. Having a doctor who understands Neurodiversity look after your broader wellness can have surprising benefits given the links between many co-occurring conditions.
Before your appointment
Once your appointment has been booked, you will receive a series of questionnaires via Novo Psych.
‍
These questionnaires form an important part of your ADHD assessment and MUST be completed before your appointment.

You are asked to forward the observer questionnaires to people who know you across different areas of your life, including:
• Someone who knew you during childhood, or alternatively school reports
• Someone who knows you in a work, university or study setting
• Someone who lives with you or knows you well at home

Please allow enough time to gather this information before your assessment.
Your Initial Assessment
Your initial appointment includes:
• 60 minutes with Dr Lisa O'Rourke.
• Approximately 15–30 minutes with our nurse.

Please allow up to 1 hour and 30 minutes at the practice.

Your assessment may also include an ECG, urine screen or other investigations if clinically required.

If all supporting information is not available at your first appointment, your assessment can still proceed; however, a diagnosis or prescription may not be possible at that appointment.

Please be aware that an ADHD assessment does not guarantee a diagnosis or prescription.

Important Information
Not all difficulties with attention are ADHD, and not everyone diagnosed with ADHD requires medication. The assessment fee is for the whole process of the initial assessment, without guaranteeing any outcome. It may result in further steps being necessary prior to all management options being open in order to guarantee your safety. This is a careful and strictly regulated process and we thank you for your patience and co-operation.

At this stage Doctor O’Rourke is unable to take over prescribing care for those patients who are already diagnosed previously due to strict government caps on numbers of patients that she can treat. While this is unfortunate, it is unavoidable and Calen Health has no capacity to change this.

ADHD treatment is individualised and may include medication as well as support from psychologists, ADHD coaches and other allied health professionals.

There are also some circumstances where ADHD cannot be managed by a GP alone under WA prescribing requirements, including:
• Intellectual impairment (IQ below 75)
• Epilepsy
• Substance Use Disorder
• Children under 10 years
• Level 3 Autism

Specialist involvement may be required in certain circumstances, which are not only those described above.
